FAQ

Common OpenVPN questions

Can I access my services on mobile if they're guarded by OpenVPN?

Yes! OpenVPN has apps for iOS and Android so you can access any and all services guarded by OpenVPN on your mobile device at any time. To access, just install the app on your device from the relevant app store and either: download the key from Discord or email the key to yourself, and then open it on your mobile device and select open with OpenVPN Connect.

Why do we need to use OpenVPN at all?

To put it simply, OpenVPN helps us to ensure that your machines are in a much more secure state all of the time. By using OpenVPN, we can restrict sensitive services such as panels, file access, database access and more to only OpenVPN users. The system put in place means that malicious attackers cannot access these services and perform vulnerability execution or other malicious attacks against your server. We go further in-depth on the security benefits here.

Will this change my IP?

Simply put, no. This isn't that type of residential VPN. Instead of changing your IP and masking your traffic, OpenVPN for your server won't actually touch your normal traffic or change your IP. OpenVPN will only route the traffic for sensitive services over the VPN, giving you access to your panel, files, and other services, but not compromising the IP address of your dedicated infrastructure, or having an impact on your normal internet usage.

I'm on Mac/Linux, Help!

Not to worry! OpenVPN supports all major operating systems for desktop and mobile. You can find instructions for installation for Linux or Mac here. Also if you do have any issues, do not worry, feel free to open a support ticket in our Discord and we'll be more than happy to help you out.

Can you whitelist me or my staff?

To keep your server secure, OpenVPN is required by all users of sensitive services and it's not possible for us to whitelist specific people by IP. If this is something that you require though then we can help you out, although it's not a simple or short process and it will require a large chunk of your infrastructure to be changed. Reach out to us in a support ticket in our Discord if you'd like us to make this change.

Can I make another user?

Well, sort of - we can always make as many new users as you require, just let us know what keys you need and the usernames of the person that the key is for. If you're a bit more tech-savvy you can create one too however the process for doing this can be a bit complex and will require you to access the system through SSH. If you didn't understand that or need a hand, we're always around to help in Discord.
